North Carolina Zoo - Asheboro

The North Carolina Zoo is the largest zoo in the United States and presents most of its animals in large areas that replicate their native habitats.

The Good:

The Zoo has two massive areas, North America and Africa, and we will describe the highlights of each section.

North America

The aviary is so vast that you actually feel you are outside much of the time. It is home to a fabulous collection of beautiful birds.

As you begin your tour in the North American section you will encounter red wolves and grizzly bears before entering the Prairie Exhibit with elk and bison. Next is indoor Sonora Desert, which is a must see and includes tarantulas, gila monsters, roadrunners, bats, ocelots and rattlesnakes. You move on to the Rocky Coast area which contains polar bears, artic foxes, and sea lions and you will even pass a group of black bears.

Your next encounter is the exceptionally authentic Cypress Swamp exhibit, which has not only alligators and snakes, but also cougars. Following this on the trail is the Streamside area which contains bobcats, turtles and otters.

Africa

The African Pavilion has a fabulous collection of monkeys, birds, snakes, and even some crocodiles.

The African Plains area is huge and really makes you feel like you are in Africa. It is inhabited by a herd of elephants, along with rhinos, antelopes, ostriches and baboons. The nearby Forest Glade is home to a group of gorillas, while the adjacent Forest Edge houses giraffes and zebras.

The Not So Good:

There is a lot of walking, but fortunately most paths are shaded by tall trees. The African area requires a two-mile walk to see everything, while the North American side is a three-mile tour.

Since the Zoo only features animals from two continents, you won’t find many animals from South America or Asia here.

The summer is probably not the best time to visit the Zoo because of the heat and humidity that North Carolina experiences this time of year.

Tip: You can take the Tram from one exhibit to the next to cut down on walking, but you still will have to walk the individual trails of each exhibit to see the animals. There is also a Shuttle that will take you to and from the parking lots and between the North America and Africa sections of the Zoo.

Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA

The Woodland Park Zoo is one of the more delightful and well laid out Zoos in the United States.

The Good:

The Tropical Rain Forest exhibit contains a wide variety of animals including monkeys, lemurs, poison arrow frogs, jaguars, and a large variety of tropical birds. We love the painted leopards (ocelots) which are the size of domestic cats and look like a cross between a jaguar and a leopard. The gorilla area is especially impressive.

The Northern Trail makes you feel like you are in the wilds of Alaska, and is populated with grizzly bears, bald eagles, elk, artic foxes, and grey wolves.

If you want to see the best of African wildlife, the African Savanna has it all. There are lions, zebras, hippopotami, gazelles, monkeys and giraffes which you are allowed to hand-feed.

The Australasia exhibit features The Willawong Station that has an array of parrots, cockatiels, and parakeets which will all eat right off a small feeding stick you will be given. The exhibit also has snow leopards, kookaburras, and kangaroos.

Another highlight is the Temperate Forest which has Southern Pudus (which are deer about the size of a small dog) and the exceptionally adorable Red Pandas.

From late May to the end of September you can enjoy the Butterflies & Blooms exhibit, filled with a variry of butterflies in a beautifully landscaped environment.

Children will love riding on the Zoo’s nearly one hundred year old hand-carved carousel.

The Not So Good:

The Penguins exhibit is closed until the summer of 2009 while a new building is being built to house them.

There is a lot of rain in Seattle, especially in the winter, which makes enjoying the zoo challenging. The best time to visit the Zoo is July and August, which is traditionally a dry period in Seattle.

Admission:

Adults 13 to 64: $11.00 ($15.00 May 1 - September 30)
Children 3 to 12: $8.00 ($10.00 May 1 - September 30)
Toddler 0 to 2: Free

The National Zoo in Washington, DC

The National Zoo in Washington, DC is part of the Smithsonian Institution and has more than 400 different species of animals.

The Good:

The highlight of the Zoo is the Asia Trail which includes the Giant Panda Habitat, with Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub, Tai Shan. In other habitats along the trail are sloth bears, clouded leopards, fishing cats (which are amazing and only a little larger than domestic cats) and the incredibly cute and rare red pandas, which are about the size of a raccoon.

You will enjoy the Great Cats Exhibit featuring Sumatran tigers and African lions. The sea lion habitat is huge and is surrounded by several fascinating aquariums. We also recommend the prairie dog habitat where you get a great view of some very active dogs.

The Zoo is home to an array of gorillas, monkeys and many of their relatives. Orangutans and gorillas live in the Great Ape House. Tamarins, howler monkeys and marmosets are located at the Small Mammal House.

Birds are abundant in a multitude of varieties in and outside of the Bird House Exhibit. You will walk in the midst of some of the most exotic and beautiful birds in the world in the jungle of the Indoor Flight Room. The Outdoor Flight Cage allows you to walk around a pond and beautifully landscaped area that houses some amazing birds. Outside the Bird House are open areas with cranes and a great variety of ducks and flamingos.

The Not So Good:

There is little negative to say about the Zoo except that much of the first half of your Zoo tour is likely to be on a downhill grade while the final half to get back to the entrance is uphill. This can be tiring especially for children and those pushing strollers. The Zoo no longer has giraffes or zebras.

Also remember than even though the Zoo opens at 6:00 AM, the exhibits don’t open until 10:00 AM so during the earliest hours you can only see animals that live outside in open areas.

Admission:

Admission is Free.

The London Zoo

The London Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and is located in Regents Park in the northern part of Central London.

The Good:

The Clore Rainforest is a unique experience. Looking down from treetop level, you peer into a lush, beautiful rainforest filled with animals. The assortment of rare species of monkeys and gloriously colored birds, including kookaburras, hummingbirds and partridges, is truly spectacular.

The newest exhibit at the Zoo is the Gorilla Kingdom. Walking through an African forest filled with native birds and monkeys takes you to an open area that is the home of a group of magnificent gorillas.

The Blackburn Pavilion is a huge tropical greenhouse that is over 120 years old and is home to one of the largest collections of beautiful birds we have ever seen.

The Not So Good:

Most of the larger animals including the lions and tigers are kept in much more confining and unnatural environments than we think they would like.

The Zoo has none of the very large animals like elephants or rhinos that one expects to see at a major zoo.

The food is incredibly expensive so bring your own.

Admission:

Children 3 - 15: £13.50
Adults 16 - 59: £17.00

Chicago Brookfield Zoo

This is one of the best zoos in the world. It is beautiful, has top notch exhibits, and has two special destinations for children.

The Good:

Our favorite place here is their first rate Butterflies! exhibit, which is open from Memorial Day through the middle of September. The enclosed garden is lovely and you will be within inches of an array of beautiful butterflies.

Among other must sees is the Dolphin Show in the Seven Seas area. The Children’s Zoo exhibit features not only a petting zoo with most farm animals, but also has a bald eagle, a groundhog, and reindeer that children delight in seeing.

In Tropic World you will be able to see many types of monkeys close-up because you have a view at the treetop where monkeys spend most of their time. Habitat Africa is huge and impressive. Among the animals you’ll marvel at there are the wild African dogs and the giraffes. Some of the other animals you’ll enjoy watching are the Siberian tigers, the wolves, and the rare snow leopards.

The Not So Good:

In addition to the price of admission, many of the exhibits have a separate admission price averaging $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for children. The food is also somewhat expensive so we recommend bringing your own food and beverages to the Zoo.

Admission:

Children 3 to 11: $7.00

Thinking Primate

Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is located in the central part of the city. It is not a large zoo, nor does it have pandas, but it is a delight for young children.

The Good:

The Wildlife Carousel is a fabulous merry-go-round and hand carved work of art that children will love and adults will admire. It is in a wonderful building that stays cool even during Houston’s oppressively hot summers. There is also a delightful children’s petting zoo with goats, llamas, and sheep that also includes a water sprayground.

We loved the aquarium and the open-air aviary that has hundreds of different kinds of birds. There is also an excellent koala bear exhibit. The Zoo also has a good collection of giraffes, bears, and Asian elephants. Their Primate collection is superb and includes orangutans, lemurs, monkeys, gibbons, and mandrills.

The Not So Good:

Houston is very hot almost half the year and there are only a few places in the Zoo where you can escape the heat. Many of the large animal exhibits seem much too small for the animals that inhabit them. The Zoo’s layout is confusing and it is easy to get disoriented.

Admission:

Children under 12: $5.00
Adults 12 and over: $10.00
Senior Citizens: $8.00

Hours:

March 9 - November 2:
9:00 AM - 7:00 PM  (Last admission at 6:00 PM)

November 3 - March 8:

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is considered one of the greatest zoos in the world.
While we enjoyed many aspects of the Zoo there are several facts that make us less than fully enthusiastic about it.

The Good:

The setting is spectactacular and the panda bears are great. The hummingbird house, which is a little difficult to find, is fabulous and is the best thing at the Zoo. The koala bear, gorilla, meerkat, and polar bear exhibits are also first rate.

Advice: The Panda Bear exhibit is extremely popular, and so to avoid hours in a long line, we highly recommend going as soon as the Zoo opens because you can often avoid having any wait at all.

The Not So Good:

The San Diego Zoo is very large and hilly so it is a somewhat exhausting hike if you want to see most of the exhibits. Many of the biggest animals are in large areas and often difficult or impossible to see. On the other hand, animals like the tigers are kept in very small cages and look sad.

Food Prices at the Zoo are outrageous -- as in $4.00 for any kind of drink -- and food prices are at least twice as high as most other zoos we have visited.

Admission:

Adult $34.00
Child $24.00

Hours:

Through June 27:
Admission 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (grounds close at 6:00 PM)

Uplifting Visions
a guide to happiness, good health, and success
Charly Mann in a Hawaiian shirt
by Charly Mann

From the age of seven I have been enchanted with the idea of living happily ever after, and have made it a life quest to find that answer. I have spoken to hundreds of people – usually older and wiser than me, and read countless books and articles on the subject. In my website Uplifting Visions I share what I consider the best insights I have learned about achieving happiness in life.

There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

-- Albert Einstein

The great breakthrough in one's life comes when you realize that you can learn anything you need to learn to accomplish any goal you set for yourself. This means there are no limits on what you can be.

-- William Robert Mann

In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.

-- Galileo Galilei

We're not meant to fit in. We're meant to stand out.

-- Sarah Ban Breathnach

If you love life, life will love you back.

-- Arthur Rubinstein

Life isn't about finding yourself; it's about creating yourself.

-- George Bernard Shaw

-- Fred Castrovinci

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think of you.

-- John Wooden

Ideas that matter; information that inspires

I don't need a friend who changes when I change and who nods when I nod, my shadow does that much better.

-- Plutarch

If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth.

-- Mitsugi Saotome

Judge yourself by your actions and not your intentions.

-- Charly Mann

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.

-- Jim Rohn

Call it Nature, Fate, or Fortune; all are names of God.

-- Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Remember to work hard. Look to the future with enthusiasm and hope. Accept responsibility, not only asking for your own rights, but also accepting responsibility for yourself, for other people, for nature and for future generations.

-- Madison Mann

Goals are a means to an end, not the ultimate purpose of our lives. They are simply a tool to concentrate our focus and move us in a direction. The only reason we really pursue goals is to cause ourselves to expand and grow. Achieving goals by themselves will never make us happy in the long term; its who you become, as you overcome the obstacles necessary to achieve your goals, that can give you the deepest and most long-lasting sense of fulfillment.

-- Anthony Robbins

Your imagination is your preview of life's coming attractions.

-- Albert Einstein

Ethical existence is the highest manifestation of spirituality.

-- Albert Schweitzer

My desire for knowledge is intermittent; but my desire to commune with the spirit of the universe, to be intoxicated with the fumes, call it, of that divine nectar, to bear my head through atmospheres and over heights unknown to my feet, is perennial and constant.

One-half of life is luck; the other half is discipline - and that's the important half, for without discipline you wouldn't know what to do with luck.

-- Carl Zuckmeyer

It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.

-- Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

-- The Dalai Lama

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

You will never be the person you can be if pressure, tension, and discipline are taken out of your life.

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

-- Confucius

The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.

-- Mark Twain

We can't measure out goodness by what we don't do, by what we deny ourselves, or by what we resist, and who we exclude; but we should measure our goodness by what we embrace, what we create, and who we include.

-- from the movie Chocolat

Random information for a more fulfilling life

Evil (ignorance) is like a shadow. It has no real substance of its own. It is simply a lack of light. You cannot cause a shadow to disappear by trying to fight it, stamp on it, by railing against it, or any other form of emotional or physical resistance. In order to cause a shadow to disappear, you must shine light on it.

Why is there something rather than nothing? We do not know. We will never know. Why? To what purpose? We do not know whether there is a purpose. But if it is true that nothing is born of nothing, the very existence of something - the world, the universe - would seem to imply that there has always been something: that being is eternal, uncreated, perhaps creator, and this is what some people call God.

It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of humankind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.

A community that cares about you

Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who treat you spitefully. When a man hits you on the cheek, offer him the other cheek too; when a man takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well. Give to everyone who asks you; when a man takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. If you love only those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. Again, if you do good only to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do as much. And if you lend only where you expect to be repaid, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to each other to be repaid in full. But you must love your enemies and do good; and lend without expecting any return; and you will have a rich reward: you will be sons of the Most High, because he himself is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate.

-- Jesus -Luke 6:27-36

We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do, by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery.
